DHAP Housing Office Open In Algiers

UPDATED: May 21, 2008

NEW ORLEANS (April 2, 2008) -- A Disaster Housing
Assistance Program (DHAP) New Orleans/St. Bernard
office is open at 3630 McArthur Blvd.in Algiers (next
door to Family Dollar store) on New Orleans' westbank.

HUD had originally tapped the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO),

HANO transferred the housing voucher program to the Houston agency, reportedly
to improve the voucher delivery system. Harris County runs the nation's largest
disaster housing voucher program.

For more information hurricane Katrina or Rita survivors can go to

dhapneworleans.org.or call DHAP at 866-202-3487.

Thursdays from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Hurricane survivors in the Harris County
area can visit

       Mississippi To Build Thousands
        Of Affordable Housing Units
HUD approves state plan for Community Block Grant funds

JACKSON, MS (June 26, 2008) -- In Mississippi, a state with a median
income among the lowest in the US, tens of thousands of houses were
damaged or wiped out by Hurricane Katrina almost three years ago, when
the Mississippi Gulf Coast suffered a direct onslaught from Katrina's
winds and storm surge.

Soon, Mississippi can start rolling out thousands of affordable
mixed-income housing units for working families still affected by the
state's severe shortage of housing, through it's $350 million Long Term
Workforce Housing plan proposed in September last year. The final plan
was sent to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) on May 30th.

On June 25, 2008, HUD accepted Mississippi's plan, funded by part of
the $5.4 billion Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) allocated
to the state after Katrina. It will provide grants and loans to communities,
nonprofit organizations and private developers to build about 12,000
affordable homes in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, and Pearl River
counties.

The plan, targeting low and moderate income Hurricane Katrina survivors
and neighborhoods, allows for purchases of blighted, deteriorating,
undeveloped or underdeveloped property, as well as home ownership
assistance and lead-testing;

Other projects the plan may cover include repairs necessary to keep
properties bought through tax sales up to code in the proposed
neighborhoods, technical assistance to public and nonprofit organizations
to increase their neighborhood revitalization or economic development
activities; and establishing a revolving loan fund to provide short-term,
low-interest financing for workforce housing production.
