Happening In New Orleans July 4
Students From 152 U.S. Schools To Help Rebuild
NEW ORLEANS (June 27, 2008) -- Over 1,300 students from campuses
across the U.S.are giving up their Fourth of July holiday to converge on
New Orleans, volunteer, and help rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward for
Hurricane survivors.
The students will be in Louisiana for an International Churches of Christ campus ministry conference.
"When we decided that we wanted to come to New Orleans to help families rebuild, we thought
immediately of HOPE worldwide, a faith-based relief agency founded in 1991. We knew they were
already there, and we knew they would help us put 1,300 college students to work for a worthy
cause," said Mike Taliaferro, the conference chair.
HOPE worldwide, which is dedicated to serving the poor and needy, plans to do service projects
around the city, such as developing a memorial garden for Hurricane Katrina victims and clearing
dozens of lots to help make way for houses.
HOPE has been busy on the Gulf Coast ever since Katrina struck in 2005. Today, the organization
continues to serve the region's greatest ongoing needs. Along with the International Churches of
Christ, HOPE's partners include ACORN, the Louisiana Family Recovery Corps, New Orleans Area
Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, and the City of New Orleans.
HOPE worldwide Vice President of US Programs Antonio Boyd said, "We have a unique opportunity
to touch the lives of those who lost everything."
Dr. Ed Blakely, the city's development czar, said the group has helped with "Operation Safe Place," the
clean-up and tree planting events in City Park in March 2006, as well as efforts to assist homeowners
rebuilding their homes in partnership with the Louisiana Family Recovery Corps.
The day is scheduled to end with a special ceremony in Buck Park. The volunteers will join with
residents and special guests, including Malaak Compton-Rock (comedian Chris Rock's wife, a
co-judge on Oprah's Big Give, and founder of the AngelRock Project) to welcome Lower Ninth Ward
residents back home. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal have also
been invited.
